ECZ urged to commence voter registration

The Zambia Electoral Alliance (ZEA) has recommended that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) embarks on the civic and voter registration exercise ahead of the 2016 general elections in the event that the continuous voter registration cannot be actualized.

And the Alliance has also recommended that the Zambia Police Service should be made to account for all the action of individual Police officers that mishandle electoral conflict in the eventGuess Nyirendathat the Police service fails to discipline such officers.

Speaking during a post election media briefing today, Alliance Spokesperson Guess Nyirenda says it is clear from the final declared results that the first past the post system is not a good electoral system for Zambia as the winner of the election beat the runner up with only slightly above 1 percent.

Mr. Nyirenda states that the system does not just waste votes, but also rejects the losers whose great capacity to develop the country is ignored at the country’s peril.

He has however commended the ECZ under the leadership of Justice Ireen Mambilima for ensuring that the election was conducted within the confines of the laws of Zambia.

Mr Nyirenda says this was despite being faced with a number of logistical challenges owing to the unfavorable weather conditions and difficult terrain in most rural places.

He has since urged the ECZ to use last month’s presidential election as a test case of 2016 general elections.

And Mr. Nyirenda has observed that the confusion that characterized the selection of presidential candidates in the PF and MMD was so grave that it assaulted the intraparty democracy of the two political parties.
