Milupi says voting pattern was not on tribal lines

The opposition Alliance for Democracy and Development (ADD) says the voting pattern that characterized last month’s presidential election cannot be justification for not including the 50%+1 presidential winning threshold clause in the new constitution.

ADD President Charles Milupi says his party does not particularly agree that the voting pattern in the presidential election was based on tribal lines and therefore having the 50 +1 vote clause in the new constitution would not be appropriate.

Mr. Milupi has told Qfm News by telephone that his party holds the position that people voted in the manner they did because of what transpired in the country in the last three years of the PF government.

He says in the last three years people have been subjected to too many unfulfilled promises and therefore the voting pattern that was witnessed in the election is actually the rejection of the ruling PF.

Mr. Milupi says this is why his party does not think the 50 +1 clause should be excluded in the new republican constitution based on last month’s presidential election.

He says his party supports the clause because it can be used to unify the country as people would vote for one most popular candidate.

Mr. Milupi says Zambia will therefore do well to emulate other countries such as the US and the UK where the 50+ 1 winning threshold is practiced.
