Harry Redknapp: QPR manager resigns because of knee operation

Harry Redknapp has resigned as QPR manager, saying imminent knee surgery will stop him doing his job.

The 67-year-old has left the Loftus Road club second bottom of the Premier League with 19 points from 23 games.

“Sadly, I need immediate surgery on my knee,” Redknapp said. “If I can’t give 100%, I feel it’s better for someone else to take over the reins.”

Head of football operations Les Ferdinand and academy coach Chris Ramsey will take temporary charge.

There were reports Redknapp was one game from the sack before the 2-0 defeat by Manchester United on 17 January.

Afterwards, Redknapp blamed an “insider” for attempting to destabilise the club, while QPR chairman Tony Fernandes issued a statement on 19 January saying Redknapp would stay as manager.

“I have had such a fantastic time at QPR,” said Redknapp, who took over at Loftus Road in November 2012.

“I would like to thank the board, the players and all my staff, and especially the supporters who have been absolutely fantastic to me since I arrived at the club for their tremendous support.

“My relationship with chairman Tony Fernandes has been one of the highlights of my footballing career and I wish the club every success.

“I am confident they will survive in the Premier League this year.”

Redknapp informed Fernandes of his decision on Tuesday morning, with QPR’s board accepting his resignation.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank Harry for everything he has done for QPR during his time in charge,” Fernandes said.

“We part on good terms and I would personally like to wish him all the best for the future.”

Redknapp’s decision comes a day after the closure of the January transfer window in which QPR’s only arrival was forward Mauro Zarate on loan from West Ham.

On the final day of the transfer window, Fernandes tweeted:  “No more cheque book. We have good players. Bought all the players manager asked for in summer. Our players not mercenaries. Good guys.”

QPR’s next game is at home to Southampton on Saturday.
