Govt called upon to fund candidates who successfully file in nominations

Government has been called upon to seriously consider coming up with a legislation to start funding political parties whose candidates successfully file nominations to participate in national elections.

The opposition United National Independence Party (UNIP) is proposing a legislation that will be allowing funding of political parties contesting national elections at presidential, parliamentary and local government level.

UNIP Secretary General Alfred Banda says his party thinks that such legislation will be most appropriate if a leveled playing field is to be created during the time the country is having an election at any of the three levels.

Reverend Banda says this in turn will give assurance to all participating political that they have an equal opportunity to win the poll.

He notes that the legislation his party is proposing will further help political parties that usually fail to deploy agents at all polling stations to start doing so each time there is a national election.

Reverend Banda notes having a leveled playing of this kind will additionally inspire confidence among all participating political parties that the election is being held in a free and transparent manner.
