SESTUZ still concerned about quality of pupils’ results

The Secondary School Teachers Union (SESTUZ) says though the number of pupils making it to secondary school has been increasing, the quality of the results remains a worry.

SESTUZ Secretary General Emmanuel Zulu says it is good that this year, an increased number of pupils have been able to proceed to high school as compared to last year.

Mr. Zulu however notes that it is not about how many pupils are making it to high school, but how many marks they score to get them to grade 10.

He says the problem is not with the pupils but also with the teachers as some of the teachers do not have the full qualifications required to teach basic and secondary school pupils, stating that ideally a pupil at senior level should be taught by degree holders but that this is not the case in Zambia.

Mr Zulu adds that the incoming government should look at ways of helping teachers to get higher education so that they get the necessary qualifications required for them to teach higher grades and produce better results.
