Presidential election fundamental lesson to Zambia- ZEA

The Zambia Electoral Alliance (ZEA) has observed that the January 20th presidential election has provided a fundamental lesson to the country not to ever hold an election in the rainy season.

EAZ Spokesperson Guess Nyirenda says this year’s presidential election has demonstrated that holding an election in the rainy season only contributes to voter apathy.

He says this is because people are usually reluctant to turn up in great numbers to cast their votes when it is raining owing to the risks related to the rainy season.

Mr Nyirenda has told Qfm News by telephone that this means that the next election should be held in the dry season.

He has also called on the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to quickly commence the registration of new voters in readiness for the 2016 general elections once this year’s presidential election has been concluded.

Mr. Nyirenda adds that there is also great need for massive civic education in order that people in the country know their civic rights and realize the importance of voting.
