DEC nab ex-MTN employee for laundering K1.7 million

The Drug Enforcement Commission through its Anti-Money Laundering Investigations Unit has arrested a former MTN employee of Lusaka for money laundering activities involving K1.7 million.

DEC Public Relations Officer Theresa Katongo in a statement to QFM News says Fernando Marques Malambo, 30, an Accountant residing at 15 Massa Street, Libala Stage 4B in Lusaka has been arrested for theft by servant, fraudulent false accounting, unauthorised interference with data and money laundering contrary to the laws of Zambia.

Ms Katongo says particulars of the offence are that Fernando Marques Malambo, in his capacity as Financial Officer – Payroll & Controls at MTN Zambia Limited on dates unknown but between 1st January, 2013 and 30th June, 2014 jointly and whilst acting together with other persons unknown did steal money amounting to K1, 780, 667.64 property of MTN (Z) Limited. She says it is alleged that the suspect engaged in an act of fraudulent false accounting in his capacity as Creator of Salaries and other payments on the MTN Integrated Banking System.

Ms Katongo says the suspect created fraudulent payments on the payroll system by inserting his three account numbers with different known banks against some names of MTN officials purporting to show on the system that they were rightly paid when in fact he was benefiting himself.

She says it is further alleged that the suspect did interfere with data on the MTN Payroll System fraudulently by modifying data to suit himself without authority.

Ms Katongo adds that the suspect did engage directly or indirectly in money laundering activities, whereby using the proceeds of crime, he purchased seven (07) motor vehicles valued at K141, 269, 080 which have since been seized by the Commission.

She further adds that two bank accounts belonging to the suspect with balances of $41, 332.61 United States Dollars and K149, 272.34 have also been seized.

The suspect has however pleaded not guilty to all charges after appearing in the Lusaka Magistrates Court on 21st January, 2015. Trial in the matter will therefore commence on 5th March, 2015.
