AU satisfied with Zambia’s election

The African Union Election Observer Mission has noted with satisfaction that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) successfully conducted the presidential election within a limited timeframe despite some logistical constraints.

Giving a preliminary statement in Lusaka today, AU head of mission Kgalema Motlanthe notes that the 20th January presidential by election was conducted peacefully in a way that enabled qualified ZMotlantheambians to exercise their franchise.

Mr. Motlanthe has however advised parliament to give immediate attention to the pending constitution amendment bill to strengthen the legal framework in the provision of independent candidature, review of the electoral system to provide for president to be elected by absolute majority among others.

He has also urged the ECZ to amend the electoral guidelines to remove the requirement for recording voter card numbers on the counterfoil of the ballot to avoid possible abuse leading to compromise of the secrecy of the ballot.

Mr. Motlanthe has further encouraged political parties to undertake programmes that will promote the participation of female aspirants in future elections unlike the case has been were only one female candidate participated.

The Former South African President has commended Zambians for the peaceful campaigns and elections and has further encouraged them to continue to conduct themselves peacefully until the end of the process.
