JCTR counsels electorates ahead of Tuesday election

The Jesuit Centre for Theological Reflection (JCTR) says Zambians have a moral duty to ensure that they elect a leader who will strive to resolve the challenges of abject poverty amidst an unlimited abundance of natural and human resource.

The JCTR in a statement issued on the eve of the presidential election notes that the poverty being experienced in Zambia is not natural but structural.

The JCTR says it is possible for Zambia to attain a developed country status in the medium long term if the country applies itself to addressing national disparities confronting the country.

The JCTR has since appealed to the voters to turn out in large numbers and exercise their inalienable right to elect a leader who has the requisite capacity to unlock the country’s potential.

The JCTR has also requested presidential aspirants for an honest and earnest introspection whether there are pursuing the office of presidency for themselves and their sponsors or for service in favor of the people.

It notes that clearly, the spurious campaign promises witnessed over the last few months manifest signs of desperation.

It points out that some of the campaign promises would not be tenable under a period of two years after which a general election is due in 2016.
