TAZARA workers resume work

Workers at Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) have returned to work after going on strike on Monday demanding payment of their five months salary arrears.

TAZARA Spokesperson Conrad Simuchile has confirmed in a statement that the workers on both sides of the border resumed work today.

Mr Simuchile says the suspension of operations has since been lifted and all train operations have resumed with immediate effect.

The stoppage ended after a ruling by the High Court of Tanzania’s labour division, which declared the strike by the unionized workers in Tanzania as unlawful.

Over 1,000 workers at Tazara downed tools on Monday in both regions of Tanzania and Zambia, crippling cross-border operations.

The TAZARA line is a key route for copper exports through the Tanzanian port of Dar es Salaam from Zambia and Africa’s biggest producer, the Democratic Republic of Congo.
