YALI commends UPND for coming up with constitution roadmap

The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) has commended the United Party for National Development (UPND) for releasing its ambitious roadmap for the enactment of a new Constitution.

YALI President Andrew Nthewewe says his organization is delighted that the roadmap is coming shortly after they had also challenged all Presidential candidates, including the UPND Leader Hakainde Hichilema, and their political parties to clearly state how they would enact a progressive and new Constitution for Zambia.

Mr. Nthewewe has told QFM News that he has studied the 6-Point roadmap released by the UPND, and has noted that concepts put forward by the UPND are not much different from the 10 – Point Plan YALI had submitted to Government on 31 May 2014.

He says the UPND has demonstrated some level of commitment to putting the roadmap on the table for consideration by other stakeholders.

He has since encouraged other candidates and stakeholders to do the same so that different views can be brought on the table for consensus building that can culminate into the final roadmap that will then be submitted to parliament for enactment of a legal framework.

Mr. Nthewewe points out that something to note from the UPND roadmap is the inclusion of the Constitutional Delivery Team that is similar to the Constitution Negotiating Committee his organization had proposed in the Fourth stage last year.

The YALI President has since reminded the UPND legal team that holding of the Referendum vote is no different from holding any major election and that YALI finds it not attainable to hold this type of national-wide election shortly before the 2016 General election.
