There was confusion in Lusaka today when the opposition United Party for Nation Development (UPND) impounded two trucks from South Africa registration numbers BJ 45 GP and FKB 685 FS belonging to African Cargo Management claiming there were carrying pre-marked ballot papers.

The trucks were later taken to Lusaka Central Police Station as the impasse was being resolved before being taken to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) offices for inspections.

After opening them, the trucks were carrying folding chairs and tables, lanterns and batteries for ECZ.

The trailers were opened in the presence of UPND officials, ECZ officials, Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) officials and Zambia police officer.

According to documentation availed, the trucks were ferrying 60,000 lanterns and 235,000 batteries being supplied by Micro-Point Limited to the Electoral Commission of Zambia.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission of Zambia has advised political parties taking in this month’s presidential by-election not to spread speculation that will create anxiety among the citizens.

But UPND Deputy Spokespersons Edwin Lifwekelo has maintained that his party will remain vigilant through its anti-rigging squad to thwart any suspected rigging in this month presidential elections.

Mr. Lifwekelo has told journalists that the party leadership will deal with all speculation in the electoral process to ensure there is transparency and accountability in the elections.

He has further appealed to the electoral commission of Zambia to exhibit transparency and accountability as required by law before during and after the presidential elections.
