Sinkala: Zambia will peak before AFCON

Nathan Sinkala in tussle with SangweniNathan Sinkala believes Zambia is edging towards peak levels for the 2015 AFCON despite Sunday’s 1-0 friendly loss away to Bafana Bafana.

The match was Zambia’s first friendly game of the year in the run-up to the January 17 kick-off in Equatorial Guinea and ahead of their opening Group B game a day later against DR Congo.

Sinkala said most of the players were playing their first competitive game since the end of November but still showed character despite the defeat to Bafana.

“We are getting there and most of us player were on break for a while,” Sinkala said.

The only player in Zambia’s starting eleven against Bafana to have seen any competitive action over the last fortnight was Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene.

“South Africa gave us a good training game and now we know what we lack and where we have to improve,” Sinkala said.

Bafana broke the deadlock against Zambia in the 80th minute through Thuso Phala to end the visitors five-game unbeaten run.

Zambia’s last defeat prior to Sunday’s loss came on September 10 in a 2-1 away loss to Cape Verde in a 2015 Africa Cup Group F qualifier.
