Eleven died in 80 New Year traffic accidents

Eleven people are reported to have died in 80 traffic accidents recorded during this year’s New Year period.

In a statement to Qfm News Police Spokesperson Charity Munganga-Chanda says in the same accidents sixteen people sustained serious injuries while five suffered slight injuries.

Ms. Chanda has disclosed that the 80 traffic accidents were recorded from 06: 00 hours of the 31st of December, 2014 to 06:00hrs the 2nd of January this year.

She states that the eleven people that lost their lives in these accidents were from Lusaka, Copperbelt, Luapula, Eastern, Western and North-Western Provinces.

The Police spokesperson notes that from the 80 recorded traffic accidents 35 were reported from Lusaka province while the Copperbelt province had 21 accidents with the Southern Province recording 6 accidents.

She says Eastern and Western provinces had 4 each while North-Western recorded 3, Luapula province 2 with the lowest being Northern Province which had 1 accident.

Ms. Chanda says no accident was recorded in Muchinga province.

And Ms. Chanda has observed there has been a decrease in the number of accidents and fatalities reported this year as compared to last year during the same period.

She notes that the number of deaths have reduced to six from the seventeen recorded last year to the eleven that have been recorded this year.

Ms. Chanda says in comparison to this year which has recorded sixteen serious injuries and five slight injuries last year had twenty seven and twenty five respectively.

She says the Police have also taken note that a decrease in the number of damaged vehicles from 90 last year to 50 this year.

Ms. Chanda states this is attributed to intensive Police patrols and adherence to road traffic rules by members of the public.
