Opposition UPND president Hakainde Hichilema says public service workers such as teachers deserve support and recognition.
Mr. Hichilema says teachers play a crucial role in the development of the nation.
He says teacher have a large responsibility on their shoulders to educate and inspire the next generation of Zambian businessmen and women, farmers, workers, entrepreneurs and politicians.
The UPND president notes despite all this he thinks that such noble services have been largely neglected and government support for them has been mainly absent.
He says this is unacceptable.

Mr. Hichilema has suggested that if the country wants to improve the education being provided currently there is need to get behind teachers and empower them.
He says teachers must feel supported by government through training initiatives and regular consultation on matters of education policy, and they must feel motivated by the remuneration of offer.
The opposition leader states that the country need to offer them better opportunities for career development.
He says the country must also make sure that they have the right facilities available to them adding that the student teacher ratio further needs to be brought under control.
Mr. Hichilema notes for the fact that whoever will become the country’s new President will have a short time until the next election in 2016, his party’s pledge to teachers I only to respect them, consult them in order to understand how government can better support them.
