Govt urged to be firm on new mine tax

Youths for Transparency and Integrity (YTI) has encouraged government to remain firm on the new mining taxation regime.

YTI Executive Director Bright Muchimba says foreign owned companies have not exhibited exceptional levels of integrity in the past and therefore government should find ways of getting a fair share from the country’s mineral wealth through taxation.

Mr. Muchimba says government should not allow itself to be threatened by mining companies but rather make decisions in the interest of the people of Zambia.

He states that it is not about the investors alone but also how beneficial their investment is to the people of Zambia.

He adds that the new taxation system will also allow genuine investors to come, stating that those who will close shop will be acting unfairly to the government.

Mr. Muchimba has further urged government and mining houses to dialogue and see how best they can help each other.
