CCPC Tribunal heard 85 appeal cases between October 2012 and December 2014

The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal says it has handled 85 appeal cases from October 2012 to December 2014.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka today, CCPC head of tribunal secretariat Healey Mweemba says 75% of the total filed cases were consumer related cases, while 25% were competition in nature.

Mr. Mweemba notes that prominent among the cases were those relating to unfair trading practices arising from traders or shop owners failing to display disclaimers such as no refund and no return.

He adds that during the same period, the tribunal passed 12 judgments and ruled to allow 12 appeal cases to be settled outside while 9 cases were voluntarily withdrawn.
Mr Mweemba says in 2014 alone, the tribunal received twenty new appeal cases and out of which eighteen cases were consumer related, while two were cases of competition in nature.

Mr. Mweemba says the marginal increase in the number of appeal cases is attributed to the expansion of the size of the economy.
