Grand Coalition optimistic about new constitution

Fr Chiti

The Grand Coalition on the Demand for the People Driven Constitution has expressed optimism that country stands a better chance of having a new constitution enacted before 2016.

Grand Coalition Chairperson Leonard Chiti says the optimism is drawn from the promises most candidates vying for the presidency have been making so far.

Father Chiti says his coalition has particularly taken note of ruling Patriotic Front president Edgar Lungu’s consistency during his campaign rallies where has assured the nation of his commitment to ensuring a new constitution is enacted before the 2016 general elections.

He has told Qfm News by telephone that the optimism is also drawn from the fact there is enough time between now and 2016 to enact the new constitution.

The Grand Coalition Chairperson states that it is therefore expected that each presidential candidate that has made the promise of enacting the new constitution will fulfill their promise once elected without fail.

Fr Chiti has however, warned that should whoever is elected president renege on their promise, his coalition will be left with no choice but to de-campaign him or her for failing to deliver a new constitution within the expected time frame.

And Father Chiti has disclosed that only four of the presidential hopefuls have signed the social contract to committing to prioritize the enactment of the new constitution once voted into office.

He says it is his coalition’s hope that by the end this week, all 2015 presidential candidates that will file their nomination papers will sign the social contract.
