Formulate laws to permit prisoners to vote- Govt called upon

Government and other relevant stakeholders have been called upon to consider formulating laws that will allow prisoners to take part in elections.

Prisoner Reintegration and Empowerment Organization (PREO) Executive Director Derrick Malumo says inmates are being denied of their right to chose leaders of their own choice.

Mr. Malumo says prisoners feel left out of the governance and development activities of the country.

He says it is important that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) makes wider consultations with the Attorney General, the Human Rights Commission and other relevant organizations on the possibilities of allowing prisoners to vote.

Mr Malumo notes that giving prisoners an opportunity to cast their vote will be a step in the right direction.
