Students need adequate support from govt – Sinkamba

Green party President Peter Sinkamba has observed the need for adequate government support to students at tertiary public learning institutions.

Mr. Sinkamba says the reduction of government support to students at public learning institutions has significantly affected the quality of graduates leaving the higher learning institutions.

He notes that his party the Green Party has also taken note of the overcrowding in hostels and lecture theaters that is there at public learning institutions.

Mr. Sinkamba says he is also aware that student bursaries for educational resources and food provided to the needy are not adequate enough to enable the students afford decent resources and food.

He points out that industry and business houses are now reluctant to recruit students on industrial attachment schedules as there is no incentive to do so the more reason why students leaving colleges and Universities as graduates are hardly getting decent jobs.

Mr. Sinkamba adds that the majority of graduates end up roaming the streets adding that in the alternative; they end up under-employed or resorting to taking up jobs unrelated to or befitting their qualifications, but simply to earn a living.

He says Green Party believes that to assist with covering the cost of providing decent resources to tertiary education support government should firstly explore alternative local revenue streams to the status quo to provide additional funds to significantly inject into the student bursary scheme.
