CTPD sees need to address food insecurity

Centre for Trade Policy and Development (CTPD) Executive Director Isabel Mukelabai says there is need for the country to address food insecurity and attract investment to expand economic opportunities such as enhanced agricultural trade and tackle nutrition-related issues.

Ms. Mukelabai says the incoming government needs to undertake specific measures to diversify the agriculture sector by changing the economic structures that underpin agriculture.

She notes that the country risks losing out on the anticipated increased investment destined for Africa’s agriculture sector unless the country makes it easier for traders to access markets and infrastructure.

Ms. Mukelabai adds that Zambia stands to lose out on investments if traders fail to get their produce to local and regional markets.

She explains that studies across Africa have shown that growth in the agriculture sector is more inclusive and has the potential of reducing poverty 11 times faster than growth in other sectors.
