Fifteen people arrested for beating UPND member

Fifteen people have been apprehended in connection with the beating up of a man dressed in UPND party regalia and smashing of two vehicles by criminal elements at the intercity bus terminus.

According to a statement issued to Qfm News by the Police public relations unit, the 15 are currently being screened.

Police say all those who will be confirmed to have been involved in the incident will be arrested and taken to court.

And the Southern African Center for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has condemned the said attack on the unnamed UPND member.

Executive Director Boniface Cheembe has told Qfm News by telephone that his organization believes that such acts of violence at a time political parties are conducting campaigns ahead of the presidential election are undesirable.

Mr. Cheembe says his organization is of the view that Zambian politics have matured to a level were political parties are not supposed to be engaging in violent acts.

He says SACCORD’s call to all political parties is therefore that they desist by all means from engaging in violence as it is not only undesirable, but also intimidates would be voters.

The SACCORD Executive Director has since cautioned political parties against creating violent environment during their campaigns to avoid rendering the presidential election not free, fair and credible.
