ZCEA sees need to understand cause for teenage pregnancies

The Zambia Civic Education Association (ZCEA) says there need to understand the root cause of teenage pregnancies in the country.

ZCEA executive director Judith Mulenga says girls falling pregnant should not be blamed because in most cases it is not their fault.

Ms. Mulenga states that there is need to understand the root cause of teenage pregnancies, beyond the physiological sexual act, to what is driving the girls to engage in early sex.

She says the vice is a societal problem which needs an integrated and inter disciplinary approach involving teachers, parents, sociologists, developmental psychologists, health, CSOs and the children themselves.

Ms. Mulenga stresses that girls on the other hand should also try by all means to resist the temptations of engaging themselves into sexual activities.

She has further urged Government to take the lead in the programme to eliminate the problem of early pregnancies instead of leaving the fight to NGOs.
