CSPR urges action for poverty reduction from incoming govt

Civil Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR) says the political party that will form the next government should take seriously the issue of addressing extreme poverty by taking people living in poverty as partners in the fight against poverty.

CSPR Board Chairperson John Lijimu says his organization is concerned and dismayed that some sections of the political leadership do not appear to be passionate about eradicating poverty.

Mr. Lijimu says it is not enough to merely make pronouncements on poverty eradication and ends there, but that political leaders need to act on the pronouncements that they make.

He notes that what is needed now is for candidates to express their political will and demonstrate precise, practical and workable initiatives which they will implement to eradicate poverty once they are elected.

Mr. Lijimu has further challenged those vying for presidency to highlight what participatory mechanisms as well as accountability and grievance mechanisms they will put in place to address extreme poverty.
