Acting president Guy Scott has been reminded to be way that while he presides over the affairs of his party the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) he still has the responsibility to ensure that there is peace and stability in the country.

Opposition Zambians for Empowerment and Development (ZED) president Frederick Mutesa says this means that Dr. Scott should not let his personal preferences in the election of the successor to late President Michael Sata cloud his view of the broader national interest.

Dr. Mutesa states that superintending the ruling PF’s elections at the on-going General Conference in Kabwe is only one hurdle that Dr. Scott has to clear.

He tells Qfm News that the next and higher hurdle is the presidential by-election that is due on the 20th of January, 2015.

The ZED leader has suggested that Dr. Scott must therefore show his mettle now by not allowing the intra-party power struggles in his party derail a national programme in which all citizens have a stake.

He says Dr. Scott must be decisive and impartial.

The opposition leader has also observed that while it is a fact that in every election, there are winners and losers it is obvious that Dr. Scott is on the losing side of the power-play within the ruling PF.

He says by facilitating what the majority of the PF members want, Dr Scott can however redeem himself and earn himself a place in the annals of the ruling PF’s history as an impartial umpire.

Dr. Mutesa has wondered how the people of Zambia will have confidence that Dr. Scott as Acting Republican President will superintend over free and fair presidential election in which his party will be one of the many competitors, if he does not put his personal biases aside now.

He states that the last thing Zambians want to see is the confusion that has rocked the ruling PF spill over to the national electoral process.
