Justice and Defense Minister Edgar Lungu has been declared PF presidential candidate at the PF General Conference that has been held at Mulungushi Rock of Authority in Kabwe this afternoon.

PF General Conference election retuning officer Tutwa Ngulube announced Mr. Lungu as unopposed winner of the election following the failure by the rest of the 8 contenders to show up when their names were announced to the delegates just before the election could be held.

Speaking shortly after Mr. Lungu was declared winner, PF National Chairperson Inonge Wina expressed optimism that the ruling PF is now headed for a victory in forthcoming presidential election now that it has elected its party president who is also the subsequent presidential candidate.

Ms. Wina says the election of Mr. Lungu election is the will of God and the wish of the people.

He has urged party members to remain united and peaceful.

Meanwhile reports reaching Qfm have suggested that there was a plot by some party members to file an injunction in court tomorrow the 1st of December with the view of further delaying the holding of the General Conference.

It is not clear yet whether this scheme will go ahead now that Mr. Lungu has been elected party president.

Article 55 of the PF Constitution Provides for the powers of the National Chairman. Amongst that includes the national chairman acting as president in the absence of the president or the v president at the general conference. Further, Article 52 provides for election of the office of the president. Art 52 (1) provides for the president to be elected at the general council. Art 52 (2). Provides for the intention to stand for election to be expressed to the SG. However, the expression of intent does not amount to a nomination because the names ought to be accepted by the National Council and there after nomination papers ought to be submitted to the returning officer with 20 delegates from all the provinces of Zambia as provided for under Article 52 (7). Consequently, where only one person files nominations. That person shall be dully elected as president without going to the polls as provided for under Article 52 (9). So Mr. Lungu therefore qualifies as a dully elected President.
