ECZ rules out postponement of filing of nominations

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has ruled out the postponement of the filing of nominations exercise for the 2015 presidential election on account of the continued intra party conflicts.

ECZ Public Relations Manager Cris Akufuna states that the commission has already set the dates for the exercise which is due in December and that all political party are aware of this.

Mr. Akufuna says this means the filing of nominations exercise for presidential candidates scheduled for the 17th, 18th and 19th of December will go ahead whether political parties resolve their intra party conflicts or not.

He says the commission will not for now interfere in the affairs of political parties such as the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) and the opposition Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) which have been rocked by internal squabbles.

Asked how the commission will deal with the scenario of the MMD where party president Dr. Nevers Mumba and former republican president Rupiah Banda are both claiming to be the former ruling party’s presidential candidates, Mr. Akufuna has told Qfm News by telephone the commission will cross the bridge when it gets there.

He however notes that what is important for the commission is that on the day of filing nominations all political parties will meet the requirements.
