Grand Coalition in Eastern Province set to sign social contract with presidential candidates

The Grand Coalition on championing the speedy enactment of a new constitution in Eastern Province is set to sign binding social Contracts with presidential candidates in the January 20th Presidential election.

This will entail all candidates participating in the forthcoming presidential by-election re-affirming their commitment by signing the Social Contract on the enactment of a new People driven constitution through a referendum before December 2015.

Grand Coalition Eastern Provincial Chairperson Maxson Nkhoma has told QFM News in a telephone interview that the coalition and the People of Zambia will no longer accept lip service promises of enacting a new constitution.

Mr. Nkhoma adds that people will not accept anything without putting in place mechanisms which will be used to hold Political parties accountable on their Promises.

Mr. Nkhoma says the Political party which will win the 2015 Presidential election will need to give the People of Zambia a new constitution, stating that failure to abide by the terms and conditions set out in the social contract will give the Zambian people the basis upon which to vote out such a political party.

He adds that the Coalition will during the Presidential campaigns through its members and structures in various districts also sign the Social Contract with area Members of Parliament in their respective Constituencies to commit themselves to ensuring that the new constitution is enacted by 2016.

Mr Nkhoma says it is regrettable that the Country has been made to spend more than K354 million to hold a Presidential Election after the death of the sitting President a situation which could have been avoided if the PF Government delivered and enacted a new constitution.

Mr. Nkhoma states that the funds which the government is going to spend to hold the Presidential election could have been used to pay farmers who supplied Maize to the Food Reserve Agency.
