Govt commits to comprehensive HIV prevention

Government says it remains committed to providing universal access to comprehensive HIV prevention, treatment, care and support.

In a speech read on behalf of community development, mother and child health permanent secretary Elwyn Chomba during the launch of the Zambia Prevention Care and Treatment (ZCPT) II and ZPCT II Bridge Project in Lusaka today, Deputy Director for Disease Control, Dr. Bushimbwa Tambatamba, Professor Chomba says Zambia has scored a number of successes in combating HIV.

Professor Chomba however notes that these successes need to be sustained and accelerated, underscoring the need for continuous and strengthened support from all stakeholders to the most serious health challenge.

She adds that the key drivers of the epidemic have been recognized as multiple concurrent partners, low rates of male circumcision, low and inconsistent condom use, sex workers, labour and migrant populations and mother to child transmission.

Professor Chomba states that as a ministry, they are committed to ensure that the Zambian people across the country have access to quality primary health care as close to the families as possible.

And Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary, David Chikamata says the government of Zambia is grateful to the people of America, US government and other United States agencies for their generous and sustained support in strengthening the national efforts against HIV/AIDS.

And USAID Deputy Mission Director Patrick Deskin says the US government will remain a committed partner in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

ZPCT, FHI 360 and its partners have been working closely with the government of Zambia to scale up and strengthen comprehensive HIV and AIDS services to unprecedented levels of coverage, access, equity and quality.
