Govt congratulates Phiri, Manyuchi for retaining titles

Government has congratulates boxers Catherine Phiri and Charles Manyuchi and their trainers on retaining their respective titles in Saturday’s international bouts at Government Complex.

Phiri retained the World Boxing Council (WBC) silver bantamweight title after knocking out Bukiwe Nonina of South Africa while Manyuchi retained his WBC international welterweight title after defeating Devis Casseres of Colombia in the third round.

Chief Government Spokesperson Joseph Katema says this victory adds to yet another success after the Zambia national soccer team made it to the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations Finals to be hosted by Equatorial Guinea.

Dr Katema says Zambia’s continued victories in various sports disciplines is an attestation that the country has huge potential of becoming a sporting powerhouse on the continent.

He adds that it is heartening that sports men and women have continued to show high levels of discipline, commitment, determination and patriotism to bring glory to the country.

Dr Katema says Government is confident that with support from the business community and all well-meaning Zambians, boxing will grow and contribute to the wellbeing of the country.

He states that Government is ready to work with all stakeholders in ensuring the sport is developed and as many young people as possible are given an opportunity to participate in the sport.
