Hervio praises Zambia

Head of the European Union Delegation to Zambia and COMESA Gills Hervio has commended the Zambian government for its efforts to ensure that children’s rights are duly considered in the constitutional review process.

Speaking when he meet the parliamentary committee on children’s rights  today, Ambassador Hervio says organising more meetings aimed at protecting children and consultations with children countrywide will result in concrete improvements in children’s rights.

Ambassador Hervio has also hailed the recent call by gender minister Inonge Wina for the criminalisation of child marriage in Zambia.

He stresses that the consequences of these practices are terrible not only for those young girls, but for every section of society.

Ambassador Hervio explains that the EU is actively involved in children’s rights both at the multi-lateral and bilateral levels.

He points out that in Zambia, the EU in collaboration with UNICEF supports a Mother and Child Health programme to the tune of 50 Million Euros or more than K400 million.

He further adds that this ambitious programme targets the Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5 of Reducing Child Mortality and Improving Maternal Health.
