Mighty Mufulira Wanderers promoted

Nine time Zambian champions ‘Mighty’ Mufulira Wanderers have secured promotion back to the Faz Super League after a nine year hiatus.

Zambia’s second most successful club secured promotion with a game in hand after drawing 1-1 away in Grinaker Lubengele on Sunday in their penultimate FAZ Division One North match of the season played in Chililabombwe.

Wanderers have 64 points, tied with leaders Forest Rangers and four more than third placed Kalulushi Modern Stars who had pushed the two promoted sides from the start of the season.

“I am very happy that finally Wanderers has gone back to the premier league. It is mission accomplished,” Wanderers coach Manfred Chabinga said.

“This is a great achievement on my side that after such a long time of struggling specifically with financial constraints we managed. It is a great achievement both for players, supporters and the entire technical bench.”

Chabinga, who has coached in Swaziland and Botswana, secured Wanderers promotion less than a year in charge following his appointment in January.

Meanwhile, Wanderers were demoted for the first time in their history in 2002 before making a brief return in the 2005 season.

Some of the big names to have emerged from Wanderers are Kalusha Bwalya, Charles Musonda, Jonson Bwalya and the late Zambia goalkeeper Efford Chabala.
