Tembo condemns Police’s UNZA riot quelling

Aspiring Kabwata Member of Parliament Clement Tembo has condemned in the strongest terms last night’s Zambia Police’s quelling of a  riot at University of Zambia (UNZA) Great East Campus which has resulted in one student allegedly sustaining a broken spine.

Mr. Tembo says he thinks that the police have this time gone too far for having allegedly thrown tear gas canisters in hostels which is said to have forced a female student to jump off from a window of room at third floor of a hostel and thereby breaking her spine.

He has told Qfm News in an interview that the fact that some of the affected students come from Kabwata constituency where he wants to stands a Member of Parliament in 2016 general elections he does not intend to keep quiet on this matter.

Mr. Tembo has charged the Inspector General of Police Irene Libongani should particularly get hold and investigate the matter to bring to book the perpetrators of the alleged throwing of tear gas canisters in hostels.

He says this is because if this situation continues where the Police and students continue to playing in the similar manners as cartoons Tom and Jerry students at the country’s public institution will start dying as a result of such brutal measures by the police.

But Police spokesperson  Charity Munganga-Chanda has told Qfm News in statement that on Friday the police did apprehended nine UNZA students among them the Publicity Secretary in connection with the riots that happened at the Campus.

Ms. Chanda narrates that the ninth student however jumped off the moving vehicle that was taking them to the police station and sustained injuries.

She also has disclosed that in a related development, police in Lusaka have launched investigations to establish the cause of the fire which engulfed a room at the Soweto hostel.
Ms. Chanda says it is as a result of this fire the police has established a female student sustained injuries after jumping out from the third floor through the window.

She says in the two incidents that have been recorded both students were taken to the hospital while the eight are still in police custody and will appear in court on Monday the 17th of November, 2014.
