LAZ called upon to interpret constitution efficiently

chembeThe Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has been called upon to clearly interpret the constitution with regards its indication that Acting Republican President Guy Scott qualifies to stand as a presidential candidate in the forthcoming presidential by-election.

LAZ President George Chisanga was quoted in some sections of the international media as saying that according to the current constitution, Dr. Scott qualifies to stand as a candidate in the pending by-election.

But Southern Center for Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) Executive Director Boniface Cheembe has told QFM News in an interview that organs such as LAZ should be helping in interpreting the law effectively.

Mr. Cheembe says there is need to thoroughly study the constitution and understand whether LAZ’s argument is valid.

Meanwhile, Evangelical Youth Alliance International Executive Director Moses Lungu has told QFM News in a separate interview that LAZ will be responsible for any confusion that may arise in the country over their statement.

Reverend Lungu says the constitution is very clear pertaining to Dr. Scott’s illegibility to stand as President because of his parentage.
