ZWMA warns of stern action against false scales

Zambia Weights and Measures Agency (ZWMA) has warned of stern action to companies that are using false scales.

ZWMA Public Relations Officer Diana Ngula has told QFM News in an interview that the agency will not take kindly those who will be found wanting and that the law will take its course.

Ms Ngula says the agency wants to promote consumer protection, at all times.

She  explains that that  the  agency  has  been  on high  alert to  carry out  inspections  exercise of scales used in Abattoirs and found out that REAL MEAT COMPANY and KECHEMA MEAT SUPPLIERS’ scales in Lusaka’s Industrial Area and Makeni Abattoirs respectively were not stamped with the prescribed ZWMA stamp or seal of verification.

She stresses that this is a contravention of the Weights and Measure Act Chapter 403, Section 27 (1) (c) of 2003 of the laws of Zambia.

She says Agency is saddened that these are one of the prominent meat suppliers on the Zambian market yet they chose to be complacent and not pay attention to their scales used to measure different types of meat products sold to consumers.

Ms Ngula indicates that the use of a scale without a prescribed seal or stamp of verification by the Zambia Weights and Measures Agency is an offense and legal action will be instituted accordingly.
