ZCTU appeals to govt to lift wage freeze in honor of Sata

The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) says government should honor late Republican President Michael Sata by lifting the wage freeze.

And the union says the late President will be missed because of his passion to improve the labour sector.

Speaking to journalists shortly after body viewing at Mulungushi International Conference Center this afternoon, ZCTU President Leonard Hikaumba says the labour movement would have loved to see President Sata finish the labour law reforms which his government embarked on.

Mr. Hikaumba says President Sata emphasized on workers’ protection and that he remained committed to improve the living standards of workers.

Mr. Hikaumba states that government should continue where President Sata ended and ensure that they reinstate the nurses who were dismissed for taking part in protests.

He reveals that the labour movement always wanted to meet late President Sata in person to negotiate over the possibility of lifting the wage freeze, but that they never had an opportunity to do so.

Mr Haikaumba says had they met him, there is no doubt that he would have listened to them and possibly lifted the wage freeze.
