15 people died during jubilee period – ZP

The Zambia Police says it recorded at least 15 deaths resulting from road traffic accidents during the period of independence celebrations.

The deaths emanate from the 168 road traffic accidents recorded from the beginning of Thursday 23rd October, at 18:00 hours to Monday 27th October, at 06: 00 hours.

Acting Police Spokesperson Esther Mwaata Katongo has disclosed in a statement released to Qfm News that 19 people were seriously injured arising from the 14 fatal accidents of the total 168 recorded.

Ms. Katongo says a total of 21 people sustained serious injuries from 25 other accidents, while 28 people sustained slight injuries, adding that 110 other accidents only resulted in damages to the vehicles.

She notes that Lusaka topped the list of accidents with 87 accidents out of which 7 were fatal in which 8 people died.

Ms. Katongo sys the Copperbelt province came second with 38 accidents with no deaths recorded and Southern province is third with 16 accidents without any deaths recorded, but with 5 people sustaining serious injuries while Central province had 8 accidents with 1 death.

She says others are Western province with 7 accidents and one 1 death, Eastern province 6 accidents with 3 deaths, Luapula province 5 accidents with 2 deaths, Northern Province 1 accident with no deaths and North-Western and Muchinga Provinces recording no accidents.

Meanwhile Ms Katongo has also confirmed that all the bodies of the Gwembe drowning victims have been transported to the University Teaching Hospital awaiting postmortem on tomorrow, Tuesday 28th October.

She says the body of the baby that was buried after being retrieved has also been exhumed and transported to University Teaching Hospital Mortuary for postmortem.

Ms. Katongo has further disclosed that Police have since instituted investigations in the matter.
