FODEP hails credibility of ECZ in 50 years

The Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP) says the credibility of the country’s electoral system is one of the proud achievements Zambia attained in the last 50 years.

Executive Director Macdonald Chipenzi says the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has over the last 50 years presided over elections which have resulted in the smooth transition of power.

In an interview with Qfm News Mr. Chipenzi says he thinks that such a peaceful transition of power is clearly as result of the credibility the ECZ has created for itself.

He however states that more needs to be done with respect to the Zambia Police because the Act under which it us established refers to the institution as being a force.

Mr. Chipenzi says 50 years going forward, the country needs to have a Police that is supposed to be rendering a service to the people as opposed to the current situation where the police use force on the citizens.

He adds that the country cannot be proud of itself with legislation such as the Public Order Act which was by the colonial powers to stop Zambians from attaining independence.

And Mr. Chipenzi says it is a pity and shameful that the country is marking its 50 years of independence without the Access to Information Bill being enacted into law.
