Draft constitution to be released next week

The Grand Coalition on the enactment of a people driven constitution says the confidence of the Zambian people in the Patriotic Front government will erode completely should they fail to honor their promise to release the final draft constitution next week.

Briefing journalists in Lusaka over the resolution of the meeting they had with Justice Minister Edgar Lungu yesterday, Grand Coalition Spokesperson Macdonald Chipenzi says the Justice Minister assured them that the document will be released within the independence week.

Mr. Chipenzi says the coalition hopes that this time around government will honor and not back track on its own promise.

He says failure to honor this promise, the people’s confidence in the ruling party will be eroded further, stating that already, it is at the lowest ebb among stakeholders in the constitution making process.

Mr Chipenzi adds that the Grand Coalition remains resolved in demanding for high levels of accountability on the part of the government with regards honoring its promise on the constitution.

He says the assurance from the Justice Minister that serious progress has been made to have the final draft constitution released to the public is a step in the right direction.

Mr Chipenzi has since appealed to all Zambians to remain resolute, vigilant, united and expectant to receiving the final draft constitution during the independence week.
