Govt reassures small scale farmers

Government says it is working around the clock to ensure to major challenges associated with low crop yields and poor productivity among small scale farmers are given the necessary attention they deserves.

Speaking when he officiated at the NWK Agri Services launch to handover fifteen tractors to farmers in Mumbwa district today, Agriculture Minister Wilbur Simuusa says government is slowly engaging with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that farmers have the capacity to produce more agriculture products.

Mr. Simuusa notes that small scale farmers in Zambia face major challenges such low crop yields due to various reasons among them the inability to prepare their farm lands in good time prior to the rainy season.

He explains that it is in this regard that government has taken an initiative to work with NWK Agri Services to assist farmers access finance to mechanize their farming activities and get access to the required inputs.

Mr. Simuusa said this in a speech read on his behalf by Mumbwa district Commissioner Sunday Shimabanse.

And speaking earlier, Senior Chief Shakumbila of the Sala people in Mumbwa district has hailed government’s commitment to finding strategies aimed at helping uplift the living standards of the people in his chiefdom.

The traditional leader has also urged the recipients of the tractors to put them to good use and ensure that they pay back for the company to continue assisting other farmers.

Meanwhile former Patriotic Front Secretary General Wynter Kabimba who spoke in his capacity as a commercial farmer has encouraged farmers to work hard and be able to sustain their living.
