ZACA urges govt to reduce high poverty levels

The Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has urged government to work around the clock in reducing the high poverty levels in the country.

ZACA Executive Secretary Samuel Simutunda has told Qfm in an interview that the people of Zambia should be able to feel the benefit of celebrating the country’s 50 years of independence, stating that this should not merely be an ordinary celebration.

Mr. Simutunda notes that at 50 years and with the many natural resources the country is blessed with, it is unacceptable for the majority of the people to continue wallowing in poverty as well as roaming the streets without jobs.

He observes that government appears to have failed to control the high cost of living in the country as the prices of the basic commodities have kept going up despite the cries of the people.

Mr. Simutunda adds that a reduction in the basic commodities will be a special gift to the poor majority Zambians as the country marks 50 years of independence.

Mr Simutunda has however commended Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda for allocating about K1billion to the Farmer Input Support Programme in the 2015 national budget pointing out that this may help reduce the prices of certain commodities.
