Lusaka businessman nabbed for drug trafficking

The Drug Enforcement Commission in Central Province has arrested a 40 year-old businessman of Lusaka for trafficking in more than 300 bundles of miraa.

Commission Spokesperson Theresa Katongo says Simon Mwangulu, 40, a businessman residing at Plot No. 348 Kamwala in Lusaka has been arrested for trafficking in 302 bundles of miraa weighing 113.25kg concealed in five (05) carton boxes.

Ms Katongo says the suspect was apprehended in Kapiri Mposhi as he was coming from Eastern Province enroute to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Meanwhile the Commission over the weekend arrested forty seven (47) people countrywide for trafficking in various quantities of cannabis.

Those arrested include Mercy Mupinga, 54, of Muwoonga village in Mumbwa District for trafficking in 63.1kg of cannabis, Erick Musonda, 31, a peasant farmer of Chisango village in Nchelenge District for trafficking in 5.68kg of cannabis and John Litando, 26, of Kalukungu area in Kaoma District for trafficking in 2.31kg of cannabis.

And in Lusaka, the Commission has arrested Kelvin Chalwe, 27, a taxi driver of Chibolya compound for trafficking in 49 sachets of heroin and 2.3kg of cannabis.

Ms Katongo says also arrested is Rodgers Sakala, 25, of Kanyama compound for trafficking in 1.298kg of cannabis.

And in Chipata, the Commission has arrested and jointly charged Cosmas Ngoma, 19, a convict at Namuseche State Prison and an 18 year old male convict for trafficking in 227g of cannabis.

On the Copperbelt, those arrested include Thomas Ngambi, 25, a vendor of 389 Nkwazi compound for trafficking in 2.1kg of cannabis, Phillip Lumina, 20, of Kitwe for trafficking in 1.38kg of cannabis and Jossam Banda, 25, a vendor of Nkwazi compound for trafficking in loose cannabis weighing 1.3kg.

All suspects will appear in court soon.
