Govt advised not to wait for calamity to act

Government has been advised not to wait until a calamity befalls the country for it to give an ear to the concerns being raised by governance stakeholders.

Operation Young Vote (OYV) Executive Director Guess Nyirenda says his organization is particularly disappointed that government had to open its eyes with regards the irregularities surrounding the issuance of bursaries at the University of Zambia (UNZA) after the death of a deserving student who committed suicide after being denied a bursary.

Mr. Nyirenda says government should quickly scrutinize the students that have been awarded bursaries at the University in view of the fact that most of them come from well to do families.

He has told Qfm news that even plans to transform the bursaries Committee into a loans board will not work for the benefit of the targeted students as long as irregularities in the awarding of bursaries are not addressed.

And Mr. Nyirenda says Sports Minister Chishimba Kambwili should have been the last person to comment on the issue of bursaries especially that he is not the Minister of Education.
