Release of draft constitution on Jubilee not certain – Lungu

Justice Minister Edgar Lungu says it is not certain that the release of the final draft constitution will coincide with the country’s independence Jubilee celebration later this month.

Government has been repeatedly advised to consider releasing the final draft constitution as a golden jubilee gift to the people of Zambia before the country 50th independence celebration.

Mr. Lungu, who is also Defence Minister and Patriotic Front (PF) Secretary General, says besides the meetings government has been holding with the civil society, government has been working towards the release of the much anticipated draft constitution.

He says this means that government is on course in ensuring that the final draft constitution is released to the people, except that he cannot tell whether this will be done on the 24th of October which is Zambia’s Independence Day.

Asked whether Cabinet has already tabled the final draft constitution for discussion, Mr. Lungu has told Qfm news by telephone that government has been doing internal consultations but that he cannot disclose what has been discussed.
