ZANEC welcomes govt’s bursaries reforms plan

The Zambia National Education Coalition (ZANEC) has welcomed government’s announcement that it into a Loans Board, saying the move will help save a lot of money.

ZANEC Board Chairperson Elly Mwale has told QFM News in an interview that her organization has been lobbying government to transform the bursaries given to students into a loan scheme in a bid to save money in the education sector.

Ms Mwale says government’s move is welcome in the sense that it will provide a mechanism for the students sponsored by government to return the money so that other students can benefit from the funds.

She says students who have been sponsored before by the government have not been able to return the money thus the need for government to come up with a system that will track them.

She adds that students should also develop a sense of responsibility by paying back the money so that government can use it to sponsor other students.

Ms Mwale says the move will also address the increased cases of corruption at the bursaries committee and promote transparency in the issuance of education loans.
