Govt urged to facilitate thriving of media

The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has urged government to provide an enabling environment for the media fraternity to thrive.

Speaking last night during Lucy Sichone and Bright Mwape award presentation and dinner organized by the press freedom of the Post Newspaper, LAZ president George Chisanga says the environment in which the media is currently operating under is not conducive.

Mr. Chisanga notes that the media has continued to experience harassment a situation he says should come to an end so that journalists are able to do their work freely without fear or intimidation.

He states that the media plays a vital role in the nation by informing the public on what is happening around them and hence should be supported in carrying out their duties instead of being discouraged due to intimidation.

Mr. Chisanga has also advised the government to pay attention to the needs of the media in the country so as to help them perform their duties effectively and efficiently.

He further made an assurance that LAZ will continue enjoying the mutual relationship it shares with the media in the country.

And award winner 5fm proprietor Mateyo Phiri says the media should be respected because of the important role it plays in the development of the country.
