Climate change; potential source of conflict – SACCORD

The Southern African Center for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) has noted the need for government to involve other stakeholders in the creation of awareness on the effects of climate change.

Executive Director Boniface Cheembe says his organization believes that by involving other stakeholders such as the civil society, government will be placing the seriousness that the issue of climate change deserves.

Mr. Cheembe says his organization is of the view that if the issue of climate change is not taken seriously by government, it has the potential of becoming a solemn source of conflict in the country.

He says SACCORD for instance has noted an increased level of deforestation in country which has resulted in people migrate to areas where forests and land are still fertile, while this is also viewed as an of land encroachment.

Mr Cheembe says this is why SACCORD believes there is need to increase sensitization on the issue of climate change by government involving more stakeholders in awareness creation on the effects of climate change.

He says this is in order that people in the country can be given an opportunity to take part in putting in place measures for climate change adaptation.

Mr. Cheembe says with such sensitization people will be better educated on the issue of climate change and thereby begin to cut down on practices likely to worsen the effects of climate change.
