PF 2011 victory not premised on delivery of new constitution – Scott

Republican Vice President Guy Scott says the Patriotic Front did not win the 2011 elections based on promise to enact a new Republican Constitution, but on the promise to transform the nation.

And Dr. Scott has maintained that adopt the constitution through a referendum costs a lot of money which would in turn affect other developmental projects.

Speaking during a discussion forum organized by the Press Freedom Committee of the Post in Lusaka last evening on the PF’s three years in government, Dr. Scott says people calling for the speedy enactment of the constitution through a referendum are not being sincere about the cost of such an exercise.

Dr. Scott says the PF government is concentrating on transforming the nation so that it will not be a laughing stock to other countries.

He says it is unfortunate that opposition political parties have politicized the whole issue of the constitution simply to gain political mileage.

Dr Scott adds that if government is to go by the demands for a referendum all the major projects being undertaken such as construction of roads, health posts and other major projects will be put on hold because of the huge amount of money required to hold a referendum.

And highlighting the performance of the public media under the PF administration, Dr. Scott says the people can testify that the PF has allowed the public media to operate freely.

Dr. Scott says if a comparison has to be done of how the media is operating under the PF and how it used to be run under the MMD, there is a big difference stating that his government does not interfere in the running of the media.
