Give chance to negotiations on constitution – Mwenye

Attorney General Musa Mwenye says the current negotiations on enactment of a new constitution between government and other stakeholders should be given a chance to bear fruits.

Justice Minister and PF Secretary General Edgar Lungu recently held an in-camera meeting on the constitution with members of the Grand Coalition on the Demand for a People Driven Constitution and he is expected to meet the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) next week.

Mr. Mwenye has told Qfm news in an interview that as principal legal advisor to the government he has every hope that such negotiations on how to proceed in enactment of the country’s new supreme law will yield results.

He says so far intentions are appear to be good but that he is not at liberty to disclose any fine details of what was discussed in the meeting that Mr. Lungu, who is also Defense Minister, and the Grand Coalition recently held.

Mr. Mwenye says it would be unwise for him to betray the trust of both sides of the negotiations by disclosing the details of the said meeting especially that it was held in-camera.

And Mr. Mwenye has advised the Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) to stop using the media to give advice to him.

He says him being a member of the Association and the Association having full access to his office, he does not think that it is prudent for him as Attorney General to begin to respond to the association’s advice given through the media.

The Attorney General was responding to the Association’s earlier advice tendered in the media that he advises government appropriately on the implementation of the Public Order Act.
