CEEC sees potential in cow milk production

The Citizens Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC) has noted that Zambia has the potential to increase cow milk production through improvements in production management practices.

CEEC Director General Likando Mukumbuta says this is especially that small-scale traditional farmers that own over 70% of the cattle herds in the country produce only about 1-2 liters per cow per day.

Mr. Mukumbuta states that the current milk yield per day is still very low when compared to best practices, which is above 23 liters per day per animal.

Mr. Mukumbuta notes that the demand side of milk offers good prospects for expansion in domestic consumption.

He says per capita consumption of milk in Zambia is about 190.5 million liters per year.

Mr. Mukumbuta says it is in this regard that the citizen’s empowerment commission has embarked on programs to sensitize farmers on the importance of adopting dairy farming to increase their production.
